Bowls vary in size from tiny ring dishes to large serving vessels. I paint my bowls in glass, ceramic, and wood. Glass and ceramic pieces are dish washer safe on the top rack. They are also safe for food use. Wood bowls are not for food, although all materials used are non toxic, they are more of an "art piece".
